Kindergarten
Kindergarteners at Presentation have very
busy days because they are a real part of the school and participate in all the
school activities.
We recognize that it is important to learn how to share and take turns before
you can master the academic skills, so our kindergarten is an exciting time
where there is a focus on socialization and making friends.
We use the Math Their Way curriculum. It is a real hands-on approach to
learning and the students are very engaged. Numbers are explored daily through the
calendar, using place value to keep track of how long we have been in school,
and starting to do early addition. A lot of fun is incorporated into learning
about letters and
how their sounds join together to make words. It is amazing all the words our
kindergarteners learn to read so quickly.
Friday—which we call Center Dayis everyone's favorite day of the week. Parent volunteers come into
the classroom and supervise five different
activity centers. These small groups enable many fun, hands-on science and math activities.
The adults are able to hear the children read and to help them with pre-reading
skills.
And of course, we have the acclaimed Buddy Program that pairs each
kindergartener with an eighth grade student. The eighth grade "buddy" visits
with his kindergarten "buddy" almost every morning as well as at scheduled
project times where the buddies do experiments or other activities related to
what the kindergartener is learning. The buddies also attend mass together.
The Buddy Program is so unique and so effective that KARE-11 News featured it on
its "What's Cool in Our School" segment.
Finally, our kindergarten parents enjoy the convenience and additional education
provided by the before and after school care of the
Presentation Childhood Learning Center located within our school building. |
